Former Pakistani Test cricketer Danish Kaneria has come under heavy criticism after posting a controversial tweet suggesting Pakistan's involvement in the recent Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where over 25 tourists were killed.
In his post on social media, Kaneria questioned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's silence on the incident, writing: "If Pakistan is not involved in this attack, why hasn't the Prime Minister condemned it yet?" He further escalated his accusations by asking, "Why are your forces suddenly on high alert? Because you know the truth." He concluded the post by alleging that Pakistan is "harboring terrorists" and added: "Shame on you."
Kaneria’s remarks triggered a wave of backlash from Pakistani social media users and political commentators, who deemed his statements unfounded and damaging, particularly during a time of heightened diplomatic tension with India.
The controversy comes as the National Security Committee of Pakistan, chaired by PM Shehbaz Sharif, took significant diplomatic steps in response to the incident, including suspending trade with India, closing the Wagah border, restricting airspace, and rejecting India’s suspension of the Sindh Taas Agreement—warning that any water blockade would be treated as “an act of war.”
Pakistan had earlier issued condolences over the Pahalgam attack, which Indian officials have labeled as a militant act, though no conclusive evidence has yet been presented publicly linking Pakistan to the assault.
Kaneria’s tweet has sparked fresh debate on the role of public figures in sensitive geopolitical matters, with many urging restraint and unity during times of national and regional crises.
