In a shocking and polarizing conclusion to WrestleMania 41, night two, John Cenadefeated Cody Rhodes to become a record-breaking 17-time world champion — but not without controversy.
The match seemed poised for a definitive Rhodes victory after he landed his signature Cross Rhodes on Cena. Just before the referee could count to three, rapper Travis Scott shockingly interfered, yanking the official out of the ring. Enraged, Rhodes dared Scott to enter the ring, only to deliver another Cross Rhodes that seemingly neutralized the interference.
However, the damage was done. Scott’s distraction gave Cena the opening to attack Rhodes with the championship belt. Rhodes managed to intercept the shot and gain control of the title, but as he hesitated to strike a pleading Cena, the 16-time champion delivered a low blow — the same move that ignited their rivalry in March.
As Rhodes struggled to recover, Cena struck with the belt, revived the referee, and secured the pin to win his historic 17th world championship — surpassing Ric Flair’s legendary mark.
The WWE Universe erupted in frustration across social media, criticizing the finish as “lacklustre.” Many were especially annoyed by Travis Scott’s surprise involvement and The Rock’s absence despite his key role in the feud’s buildup.
“I’m not mad Cena won. I’m mad that it ended with Travis Scott and a belt shot,” one Reddit user wrote. Another echoed the disappointment: “The Rock not showing up is ridiculous. Shouldn’t have been part of the story if that was the case.”
Following his victory, Cena embraced his new villainous persona in the post-show press conference, stating:
“Tune in Monday Night Raw to see how I ruin wrestling. And keep in mind, you are now talking to the last real champion.”
With the road ahead unclear and tensions at a boiling point, fans now eagerly await how Rhodes responds — and how Cena plans to reshape WWE with his reign.
