The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has reiterated its commitment to building political consensus on key national issues, including terrorism and the construction of new canals, urging the government to prioritize dialogue and transparency.
At a press conference on Tuesday, PPP Central Secretary Information Nadeem Afzal Chan and PPP Labour Bureau In-Charge Chaudhry Manzoor stressed the importance of unity among political forces in addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
“We are advocating for the rights of the people. If there is already a water shortage, then where will the water for the new canals come from?” asked Chan. He emphasized that farmers are already under immense pressure and need immediate support.
Chan clarified that the PPP supports the democratic system rather than any specific government. “Our objective is not to destabilize the system, but to find solutions to public problems and defend people’s rights,” he said.
Speaking on the canal projects, Chaudhry Manzoor stated that President Asif Ali Zardari has not yet approved the plans. He called on the government to convene a meeting of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) to ensure all provinces and stakeholders are consulted before proceeding.
“Without proper planning and agreement, water scarcity could escalate and severely impact agricultural productivity,” Manzoor warned, adding that the PPP stands firmly with farmers in their struggle.
The PPP leadership also condemned political point-scoring on such critical issues, advocating instead for collaborative efforts to address national challenges.
