The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has submitted a report to the Lahore High Court stating that Arshad Khan, popularly known as the viral “Chaiwala,” is an Afghan national.
The case was brought before the Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court after Arshad Khan challenged the blocking of his Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and passport.
According to NADRA’s report, while Arshad Khan was born in Islamabad and his father, Zar Muhammad, was born in Sargodha, discrepancies were found in the record concerning his mother’s name. Based on findings from intelligence agencies, NADRA concluded that Khan holds Afghan nationality, prompting the issuance of a show-cause notice.
Khan’s legal counsel requested additional time to present supporting documents to validate his Pakistani citizenship. Justice Jawad Hassan accepted the request and adjourned the hearing until April 22.
Arshad Khan rose to fame in 2016 after a candid photo of him serving tea in Islamabad went viral. The moment catapulted him to celebrity status, leading to modeling contracts and the launch of his successful tea brand, Café Chaiwala. Earlier this year, he expanded his business internationally by opening a new branch in South London.
