In a significant escalation of bilateral tensions, the Indian government has blocked the official 'X' account (formerly Twitter) of the Government of Pakistan within its territory. The move follows the controversial Pahalgam operation, which Pakistan has termed a false-flag incident.
In response to the incident, India has taken a series of drastic measures, including the immediate suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a landmark water-sharing agreement signed in 1960 with World Bank mediation. The treaty regulates the use of rivers flowing through both India and Pakistan and has long been considered a cornerstone of cooperation despite ongoing hostilities.
The Indian government also announced the closure of the Attari-Wagah border and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for all Pakistani nationals to leave the country. Additionally, the SAARC visa exemption scheme for Pakistani citizens has been suspended.
Further straining diplomatic ties, India has recalled its defense attachés from Islamabad and ordered Pakistan’s military advisors stationed in New Delhi to leave within a week.
These decisions were taken during a high-level cabinet meeting chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The actions highlight the deepening crisis in India-Pakistan relations and signal a new level of regional volatility following recent developments.
