The Punjab government has decided to launch Pakistan’s first high-speed bullet train between Lahore and Rawalpindi.
The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi. A working group, including Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, the Chairman of Pakistan Railways, and other senior officials, has been formed to prepare the project's feasibility study and timeline. The group's recommendations will be presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz next week.
Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the bullet train project fulfills a key promise to the public, aiming to offer affordable, fast, and comfortable travel facilities to the people of Punjab.
Separately, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reviewed the progress of two major initiatives: the Lahore-Rawalpindi bullet train and Pakistan’s first provincial airline, Air Punjab.
During the meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz officially approved the launch of Air Punjab, which will initially operate domestic flights. Four Airbus aircraft will be leased to commence operations, with plans to expand internationally after a successful first year.
The Lahore-Rawalpindi bullet train project also received formal approval. The service is expected to cut travel time between the two cities to about two and a half hours.
