In a landmark move, the Home Department has decided to set up Punjab’s first central DNA database to enhance crime detection and strengthen the justice system.
The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) will be responsible for collecting DNA records from across the province, including samples from all prisoners and known habitual offenders. The new database is expected to significantly speed up the identification of suspects involved in serious crimes.
Following directives from Home Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, a specialized working group has been formed to develop a model for establishing the central database. The group is tasked with presenting its recommendations within a week.
The working group will be led by Dr. Muhammad Amjad, Director General of the PFSA, and includes Waleed Baig, Director of Administration at PFSA, Professor Dr. Muaz-ur-Rehman, and DIG Athar Waheed.
Officials believe that the centralized DNA repository will not only enhance investigative capabilities but also bring major improvements to the efficiency of the justice system.
